Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
