The United Kingdom and the United States have reached a important trade agreement that will ensure no duties on British drug exports going into the American market.

The Terms of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to boost spending on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This commitment ensures that import taxes on these crucial goods will stay at nothing for a duration of three years.

This deal comes after earlier threats to significantly raise duties on branded pharmaceutical imports, with figures discussed up to double the cost.

"This agreement between the Britain bolsters the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and introduces long-overdue balance to American-British pharmaceutical trade," a release said.

Economic Impact

Pharmaceuticals are one of the UK's most significant goods shipped to the US, which is easily the largest buyer for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data indicate that in the year prior to last September, the UK shipped drugs totaling billions to the US. This amount made up a significant portion of total UK exports in that span.

"This deal safeguards work, boosts funding and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary stated.

Specific British Pledges

The deal includes several specific pledges from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it deems new treatments to be prohibitively costly by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to raise overall NHS spending on treatments from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The sum drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be capped at 15%. Previously, rebates topped 20%.

Industry Background

The deal comes amid a long-running row between the sector and the ministers over drug pricing and approval rates.

The disagreement were heightened by assertions that American consumers were charged several times more for the same drugs than people in the other developed nations.

In recent months, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been directed toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS had to spend more on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
