European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
