Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in that campaign, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the nature of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
